From a dull ache to the completely unbearable, headaches range in severity and are a condition that many people need to deal with regularly, or for some, daily. Milder headaches are more of an inconvenience, whereas migraines, for example, can be debilitating.
Regardless of the type of headache you have, there are things you can try to alleviate the pain or get rid of the headache altogether. Here are 5 ways to relieve the symptoms of a headache.
Stay hydrated
Many headaches are caused due to dehydration. When you don’t drink enough, your brain tissue loses water. This in turn causes your brain to shrink and loosen from your skull, which triggers the pain receptors that surround your brain. If you think your headache is caused due to dehydration, try drinking a bottle of water. It should only take a few hours to alleviate the pain.
Essential oils
Essential oils are commonly used in aromatherapy to bring a state of mental and physical wellbeing. They are available in a range of different scents, many of which are known to ease headache symptoms. According to Kumi Oils, an essential oil specialist, rosemary is considered one of the best essential oils for migraines as it helps the body to relax. When massaged into your temples, peppermint is another scent that is effective with migraines. If you aren’t sure which scents to try, get a few, and see what works best for you.
Avoid from bright light
Headaches can be exacerbated by light, so if you are struggling with the pain, step away from your computer, TV, or tablet and, if possible, dim the lights. If you have to go outside, it’s a good idea to wear sunglasses as the light could make your symptoms a lot worse.
Many people who suffer from regular headaches find that staying inside with curtains closed and lights off can help immensely, so it’s a tried and tested method.
Keep stress levels to a minimum
Stress is a common trigger of tension headaches. When we are stressed our neck, jaw, and shoulder muscles can tighten, all of which can result in a headache. Whether your stress is due to work or home life, it’s a good idea to try and find ways to manage it. Yoga and meditation work particularly well and are a great way to get rid of negative energy and promote a feeling of calm.
Be wary of a quick change of diet
Switching to a healthier diet is great for the body and the mind. Be aware, however, that cutting out caffeine or sugary foods too quickly can lead to headaches. This is not, of course, to say that you should continue consuming them, just consider reducing your intake a bit more gradually if you can.
If you do want to change your diet straight away, the headaches should diminish in a week or two. Stay hydrated and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
