The human brain is an amazing organic machine that controls every aspect of our body and mind. It’s active 24 hours a day and seven days a week for your entire life. We use it every day to make complex decisions and research as well as simple movements.
Despite it being a part of us, many people don’t understand how amazing the 3-pounds of gray matter inside their skull is. We’ve put together seven facts about the human brain that you’ve never thought about.
Don’t think you’re not special because you house one of the most amazing organs ever created.
Facts About the Human Brain: Limitless Storage
Have you ever had too many photos on your phone or too many games on your computer? Despite terabytes of memory, it gets used up and you run out of storage space. This will never happen to your brain.
There are 86 billion neurons in a healthy brain and all these neurons are interconnected. These connections store your memories and everything else about your body and it’s only a fraction of the total storage available.
Your Brain Is Mostly Fat
People spend a lot of time exercising and dieting to lose fat, but the brain is one place you don’t want that to happen. The brain is about 60 percent fat, which is the most of any organ. If you want to keep it functioning at the highest capacity, then eat plenty of healthy fatty acids such as avocados.

Your Brain Needs a Spinal Cord
Your brain is an amazing machine but think of it as the battery and engine for a car. It’s got all the juice to make your body move, but it needs a network to tell the cells in the body what to do. Any movement you make comes at the direction of your brain.
The spinal cord sends messages to and from your brain. For example, if you’re in a car and you see a red light. Your eyes send an impulse to the brain about the light, then the brain understands you need to stop and sends an impulse to your foot to put on the brake.
This is all done through the spinal column.
Your Brain Generates Electricity
It takes a lot to run your body and the brain generates enough electricity to power a light bulb. That might not sound like much, but it’s a big deal for an organic machine. Generating all that power takes a toll and the brain needs sleep to keep the pathways healthy.
Without sleep, proteins can build up and lead to diseases like Alzheimer’s.
The Brain Freeze Is Real
If you’ve ever drunk a cold beverage or eaten ice cream too fast, you experienced a brain freeze. It’s a sudden and brief headache. When you eat or drink something very cold, it impacts the outer covering of the brain.
The sudden cold dilates the small arteries on the covering and leads to a headache. Thankfully, a brain freeze isn’t serious and should subside after a few minutes.
